First-Year Red-tailed Hawk and the Red-headed Woodpecker

I explored the SE section of Central Park on Saturday.  My first stop was The Pond, where right next to the Plaza Hotel some fun birds for the winter are a Wood Duck, Northern Pintail, and a Great Blue Heron.  Then it was off to see how the Red-headed Woodpecker was doing.  While I was on my way, I spotted a young Red-tailed hawk.  A nice afternoon of birding.

Immature Red-headed Woodpecker In The Snow

Central Park has had an Immature Red-headed Woodpecker near 68th and Fifth for over a week.  I caught up with it after it started snowing on Saturday.  It was hanging out in and around a Shagbark Hickory tree.

Antarctica Penguins

I’m on vacation in Antarctica.  We’re having wonderful weather for their summer, highs around 36.  Penguins are plentiful, and we’ve seen all three members of the Pygoscelis family, Chinstrap, Adelie and Gentoo Penguins so far.

More Ruby-throated Hummingbirds

I spent the afternoon watching more Ruby-throated Hummingbirds at the Oven in Central Park, just as I had yesterday.  They’re so much fun to watch!

Central Park’s Oven

In the Ramble of Central Park is an area of the Lake called the Oven.  It has a patch of Jewelweed that attracts Ruby-throated Hummingbirds and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks during the fall migration.  It also attracted a Tennessee Warbler today as well.
